Commemorative
Named for Peter Kalm (1715-1779), Finnish pupil of Linnaeus. Sent by Swedish Government to report on natural resources of North America in 1748.

Jean-Francois Gaultier helped the botanist Pehr Kalm to explore the area around Quebec (1749), and the grateful Kalm named Gaultheria in his honour.
