Commemorative
Possibly named for James Forbes 1773 - 1861, gardener to the Duke of Bedford, but there were several possible candidates. No confirmation found.
Medicinal
These notes refer to the related species S. sinensis ( now known as Barnardia japonica var. japonica) and its use in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Bulb: Pounded and applied to abscesses; mastitis.

This plant has been growing in the garden here prior to 1975. It was labelled as Scilla forbesii. It has been re-identified as Chionodoxa sardensis.
