Medicinal
All green vegetables contain folic acid (as does this plant) which is metabolised to the active chemicals dihydrofolic acid and tetrahydro-folate in the liver. Essential for cell growth, DNA synthesis and repair of DNA. Folic acid supplements are given to pregnant women to ensure sufficient folate for the dividing cells that will make the foetus grow. However folic acid given on its own to chilren with leukaemia has been noted to make the leukaemic cells grow more effectively and to worsen the illness.
