Medicinal

Extracts from plants of the Astragalus genus are widely used in Chinese herbal medicine where the plant is known as ‘huang qi’. It is reported to have immunostimulatory properties and a host of additional benefits including reducing blood sugar and blood pressure. Numerous laboratory studies have suggested that extracts of the plant may modify physiological functions but the significance of these are unclear. A number of small-scale trials report a plethora of benefits from astragalus and selective reporting of these provides ample opportunity for ‘evidence-based’ advertising. Meta-analysis of trials for cold and flu prevention in the young did not confirm the efficacy of the herb and similarly a review of trials in diabetes did not unequivocally identify benefits. However a meta-analysis of astragalus in small cell lung cancers did suggest that there may be some improvement in outcomes with this medication and the authors conclude that further studies are indicated. The jury remains firmly out on the benefits of astragalus with trials to-date being of poor quality. Given its widespread use in China it is to be hoped that definitive clinical trials can be concluded to confirm or refute the numerous claims of benefit. GRF December 2018
