Commemorative

Named for Jean Ruel (1474-1537) Physician to Francois 1 of France, Professor in University of Paris. Translated the Materia Medica of Dioscorides from Greek into Latin in 1516. This was 'borrowed' by Pietro Matthioli for his Commentaries on Dioscorides. (1544 and more than 50 editions). Ruel also published De Natura Stirpium (1536) a botanical treatise..
