It is not easy to tell if it is the ‘Apple of Coloquintada’ or the ‘Pompions’ of Johnson, but as many of these were cultivated plants, they may all be varieties of Cucurbita. The woodcuts are helpful and suggest that Johnson (in Gerard's Herbal, 1633) knew it as Pepo major sylvestris – the great wild pompion.
