Mayumi Hashi is a member of the Society of Botanical Artists, the American Society of Botanical Artists and the Chelsea Physic Garden Florilegium Society (Fellow). Her botanical paintings have received Gold Medals from the Royal Horticultural Society and are included in Prince Charles’ Florilegium and the Hunt Institute collection. She was awarded the RHS Dawn Jolliffe bursary to paint orchids in their habitat in Peru in 2006.
Her exhibition entitled ‘Medicinal Plant Iconography: paintings by Mayumi Hashi’ exemplified the precision of modern botanical illustration. Her paintings were displayed alongside early woodcuts and engravings of medicinal plants. Together they charted the evolution of medicinal plant iconography and identification. The exhibition also included a commentary on the properties and medical uses of the plants illustrated, including treatments for cancer and heart failure, and an insight into the painting techniques and materials used by the artist.
